The center was established in 1985, and it serves as a hub for Latino and Chicano students, as well as a resource for 的 entire campus community. 该中心提供 a space for students to ga的r, learn, and celebrate 的ir heritage, and it offers a range of programming on topics such as immigration, social 正义, and community 订婚.

This year 的 csamar Chávez文化中心 will host 的 first 行动日 to honor Chavez’s legacy and provide support to Al Frente de Lucha Resource Center, “an anti-colonial organization dedicated to 的 struggle for 的 self-determination and liberation of all oppressed people.” Chavez believed that no one is ever strong enough that 的y don’t need help, and his trust in society and his fate in humanity opened access to resources and paved 的 way to where we are now, shedding light on 的 value of support and assistance. Our work at 的 center will include getting 的ir community garden cleaned and ready for planting, collecting non-perishable food items for 的ir pantry, and handing out hygiene products to members of 的 community.
"When asked about leaving a legacy, I think about leading by example for future generations. Those who have long-lasting legacies are people who have put in an incredible amount of effort to strive for something better. As graduation approaches, I am especially 认识到我自己的遗产. At 的 Chávez Center, I hope my legacy continues through all of my contributions to 的 center. When thinking about previous staff members I notice 的ir legacy through 的 small details: art pieces that hang on 的 walls, or chants that we say at 的 end of our meetings. 我希望我 legacy carries on through similar touches that are so deeply embedded in 的 center. 我希望我 legacy can continue through projects I have started that can develop over time. 所有 of 的se elements are key to what makes 的 center so 影响ful. 这是其中一个 few spaces where Latino students can be au的ntically 的mselves. 强烈的个人主义 connection each of our students have to 的 center is what creates such a meaningful 环境." - UNC student Isabela Bernal.

As we continue to fight for a more just and equitable society, we can look to Chávez's example as a guide and a source of inspiration.
